The Green Trees outside the Forest Project aims at raising awareness of the potential of Farmer Managed Natural Regeneration (FMNR) techniques to increase on-farm tree cover and bring multiple benefits to rural people, including better grain harvests and more plentiful firewood and feed.
The long term goal of this Ecoplan, Local Green Projects and Eco Project is to contribute to reversing the devastating effects of deforestation on rural and urban livelihoods in the Mopti region. Its immediate purpose is to scale up the successful experience of community management of field trees in Bankass.
Many farmers from different villages confirm that they had adopted FMNR techniques, as a result of the project. Much work remains to be done over the next few years to promote widespread and sustainable adoption of FMNR and help impoverished rural communities to improve food securinty, reduce poverty and adapt to climate change.
